The World's Most Digital Nation
Your Ultimate Guide to the Estonian Digital Nomad Visa (D-Visa)
Estonia, the world's most digitally advanced nation, was one of the first countries to recognize the power of remote work by introducing a dedicated Digital Nomad Visa (D-Visa). This visa is your ticket to legally living and working remotely from the vibrant and tech-savvy environment of Estonia for up to a year.
It's the perfect solution for remote professionals, freelancers, and entrepreneurs looking for a long-term stay without requiring an Estonian employer.
What is the Estonian Digital Nomad Visa?
The Estonian Digital Nomad Visa is a type of Long-Stay Visa (D-Visa) specifically designed for remote workers. It allows you to legally reside in Estonia for up to 365 days while continuing to work for an employer or clients located outside of Estonia.
Since Estonia is part of the Schengen Area, the D-Visa also allows you to travel in other Schengen member states for up to 90 days within any 180-day period.
Key Eligibility Requirement
To qualify for the Digital Nomad D-Visa, you must meet the following criteria:
Work Location Independence: You must be able to perform your work duties remotely using telecommunications technology.
Employment Status: You must fall into one of these categories:
Have an active employment contract with a company registered outside of Estonia.
Conduct business through your own company registered outside of Estonia (as a partner or shareholder).
Work as a freelancer or consultant providing services mainly to clients whose place of business is outside of Estonia.
Minimum Income: You must prove that your gross income met the minimum threshold for the six months preceding your application. The current minimum monthly gross income threshold is generally €4,500. Always check the official government sites for the most current amount.
No Estonian Ties (for work): Your income must come primarily from outside of Estonia.
Application Procedure
Applying for the Estonian Digital Nomad D-Visa involves a straightforward, multi-step process.
Check Eligibility & Gather Documents
Confirm you meet the work status and income requirements. Then, begin collecting your supporting documents. All documents issued in a foreign country must generally be translated into English or Estonian and may require an Apostille or legalisation.
Complete the Application Form
Fill out the D-Visa application form, typically available on the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs website or a related application portal. You will usually need to print and sign the form after completing it online.
Schedule and Attend an Appointment
The D-Visa application must be submitted in person.
Outside Estonia: You must apply at the nearest Estonian Embassy or Consulate General that handles visa applications. In some countries (like the USA, Canada, Australia), applications are handled by a VFS Global office on behalf of the Estonian Government.
Already in Estonia (Legally): You may be able to apply at a Police and Border Guard Board (PPA) office.
You will need to book an appointment, bring all your original and copy documents, submit your biometrics (fingerprints), and pay the state fee.
Application Fee (D-Visa): The state fee is typically €100 to €120. Always verify the current fee.
Wait for a Decision
The application review process typically takes up to 15 to 30 days but can sometimes take longer, up to 60 days, depending on your situation and where you apply.

Digital Nomad Visa vs. e-Residency
It's important not to confuse the Digital Nomad Visa with e-Residency.
Digital Nomad Visa: A physical visa (D-Visa) that grants you the right to legally reside in Estonia for up to one year.
E-Residency: A government-issued digital identity that allows you to start and run an EU-based company online, but does not grant you residency or permission to enter or stay in Estonia.
Many digital nomads choose to get both: the DNV to live in Estonia and e-Residency to handle their remote business in an efficient, digital environment.
